Scandinavian Solid Silver and Gilded Heart-Shaped Vinaigrette or Hovedvandsaeg

Antique Solid Silver, Originating in Norway or Denmark, the Hovedvandsaeg served as a token of love or affection. The earliest forms were heart-shaped, with hinged lids and gilt interiors, held smelling salts or aromatic vinegar. 

This is a particularly fine example, with double hinged compartments, seamed body, banded, double-heart motif, crown finial, and original gilding and hinge intact.
